The Pettigrew House, according to historical records is "one of the oldest in the Godshaw Hill neighborhood in Tryon. This L shaped house was built not later than 1890. It was built for the Pettigrew family whose plantation comprised much of the area which is now the Broadway extension. The house footprint has been embellished with a two story, three side bay in the front of the house." The house is indicative of the fine construction prevalent at the turn of the century and in many ways incorporates many energy efficient techniques used by thoughtful builders today. The house is situated to take advantage of the morning sun and the three covered porches block the afternoon sun in the summer heat. It uses a configuration that maximizes air flow throughout the house by using floor to ceiling windows opening to the veranda and living rooms as well as front and rear doors opening to the upper and lower level back and front porches. This three (or four) bedroom, two bath house is in the final stage of restoration and in move-in condition. Every effort has been made to be faithful to the original detail while transforming the house into a comfortable residence.
