This fine antique cape is a Charles Bulfinch design built in 1820. The local historical society refers to the home as the Peabody House. Located in Machias on the west side of the Machias River, within walking distance of the town, the house has an unusually large lot of approximately 2 acres. Three of the boundaries are old town roads and on the eastern side is a Revolutionary War era cemetery maintained by the DAR. Further east the land slopes down to town property, a few hundred yards from the Machias River, which is visible when the leaves are off. The town of Machias is the Washington County Shire Town hosting the County Court, numerous state offices, and a campus of the University of Maine. The nearest stoplight is 60 miles, and the interstate is only 100 miles away. Principle industries in the area are fishing, lumbering & blueberries. The 2 story, twin chimney, 5 bedroom cape measures 30' X 40' (2400 sq/ft), with an ell measuring 16' X 30' (960 sq/ft), the attached two garage/workshop measures 18' X 28' (1000 sq//ft) for a total of 3360 sq/ft of living space and 1000 sq/ft of workshop/garage. The granite foundation is sound and very straight; the full cellar under the cape stays very dry and houses the 3 zone hot water furnace and electrical service entry which includes a GenTran connector for a portable generator. The two chimneys in the cape support 4 marble faced fireplaces. The Chimney in the ell has been lined and is used to vent a Vermont Castings parlor type stove. The garage chimney lined and used to vent a forced hot air furnace for the upstairs workshop. Plumbing and electrical are new since 1975 with the exception of some original fixtures that have been retained. The roof was stripped and resurfaced in 1994. The chain of ownership includes only 5 owners since construction, and the house has remained remarkably original. The room arrangements are unaltered and the trim and fixtures mostly period. The grounds are about 1/2 lawn and 1/2 brush. There is a garden spot and an old clay tennis court that has been grassed over.
