The Dunnan-Hampton HouseThe house at 511 West Pells Street, Paxton, IL was built in 1897. The Dunnan family purchased the house in 1900 and were the first occupants. In 1958 the house was sold and turned into apartments. We purchased the house in 1996 and returned it to a single-family residence while restoring it to its original elegance. The house is located on the corner of a brick street and a solid surfaced street within walking distance of parks, schools and downtown.Paxton, Illinois has a population of 4500 and is located on Interstate 57, 120 miles south of Chicago and 25 miles north of Champaign-Urbana with its University of Illinois and Willard Airport. Bloomington, IL is 60 miles west on route 9 with its Illinois State University and Central Illinois Regional Airport with its free parking.On May 22, 2007 the Dunnan-Hampton house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are no restrictions due to this designation. It was recently featured in the Winter 2007-08 issue of a magazine called At Home in Central Illinois published by the Champaign News-Gazette.Original special features of this house include: a three-story open staircase, easy access into the cupola, hand carved doves, hand carved lion heads, stained glass, Minton tiles with artwork by William Wise around the fireplace, spandrel, two bay window areas, pressed design in doors, and two sets of pocket doors.
