You can live in the country on 3 plus wooded acres, with over 4,000 square feet of living space, in Onalaska and only two minutes from Valley View Mall. Walk to new Eagle Bluff Elementary or to the new Franciscan/Skemp Clinic or Home Depot and Wal-Mart. While quiet and secluded the house is only minutes to shopping and work. With two universities and one technical college only 7 miles away, this is definitely a gas saving location.
The original house was built in 1979 with a major remodeling and addition in 1995. It is a raised ranch with an open concept of large areas for entertaining and spacious living. There are beautiful maple and oak floors throughout. The eat-in kitchen features solid maple cabinets and a center island with a deck access and view of the hills and the fireplace which is central to the house. The dining and living area features large windows, maple floors and again the central fireplace. This is a great entertaining area, with room for a crowd and a piano. The wood burning fireplace features air tight doors on three sides with venting from the outside so that air is drawn from outside the house instead of using the warmer, inside air. It is an excellent source of heat and is raised 3 feet off the ground for great fireside seating.
There are three bedrooms and a bath on the main level in the east wing of the house. One of the bedrooms features a separate entrance to the bathroom while the other two bedrooms have hallway entrance to the bathroom.
The lower level of the east wing of the house features the entrance into a ceramic tiled foyer, oak staircase, sitting area and bathroom. There is also a large, carpeted family room with many south and east windows making it bright and airy. This could also be turned into a home entertainment area with the addition of drapes.
Back on the main floor, we venture down the hall to the laundry room with a separate stairway to the garage. This is an excellent mud room/laundry room with coat closet and plenty of storage for crafts, gift wrapping etc.
The master suite is also on the west end of the house and features a grand bath with his and hers sinks, whirlpool tub, shower and view of the hillside. A large walk in closet is part of the grand suite with glass pocket doors separating the bedroom from another large area which can be used for sitting, T.V. exercise or office. This room features large floor to ceiling windows that offer a view of the wildlife outside.
Now to the garages. There is room to park 6 cars or other selection of toys. There is always room for work benches. The garages can be heated but rarely freeze without any added heat. There are fours separate, insulated garage doors, two of which are eight by eight to accommodate those larger toys.
The house is wired in seven locations for cable and phone service. There are two high efficiency gas furnaces and two air conditioners. One heating/cooling unit for each end of the house. The hot water is preheated with gas and maintained by another electric water heater. There is a central vacuum which is really convenient, no more hauling a vacuum up and down the stairs. The chimney is equipped to handle a wood heater besides the fireplace and with all the wood available, it makes heating easy.
The exterior of the house is cedar and stone with an asphalt driveway. There is a small earthen floored, cedar storage building which was originally a horse barn. This horse barn is great for storing the wood for the fireplace. On top of the hill there is small playhouse complete with windows and a deck for when the kids need to get away.
The hillside location features lots of trees, but 12 really great white oaks, well over 150 years old in addition to many shagbark hickories, birch, and the colorful maples that spring up everywhere. The house is bordered on one side by large Arborvitaes and we have planted some spruce and fir on the south side. The north and west are all wooded with a few trails cut in for exploring. There are lots of deer that come to visit as well as turkeys, fox, rabbits etc.
We have excellent neighbors in the subdivision which is about 30 years old and most of the houses are about that old, most with large lots. The school bus goes through the subdivision and takes the kids to private or public schools. The house is in the town of Medary which makes for lower taxes than the city of Onalaska or Lacrosse, yet we are close enough to enjoy the many benefits they offer.
The house has been inspected, water, electric, pest and structure and are all sound. The house is very well built with 6 studs and plywood sheathing. The attic is insulated with 12 of insulation and Anderson Perm shield Windows were installed throughout 12 years ago.
